Maria Gasparian, an award winning ceramic designer, architect and researcher, will present at the next Brick Works event in Cambridge on Wednesday 16th October. The evening event, hosted at Queens' College, will provide a 360-degree perspective on the clay brick environment and future possibilities.
Originally from Armenia, Maria studied architecture in Armenia and the UK, gaining RIBA Part 3 at the University of Westminster.
In 2016, Maria graduated from MA in Ceramic Design course at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London where she carries out her practice-based Doctoral research.
Maria’s multidisciplinary practice combines ceramic art, design and architecture with a particular focus on the creation of ceramics on an architectural scale and the integration of these in buildings and public spaces.
Her sculptural ceramics are both decorative and functional and are formed using a combination of industrial and craft methods. Collaboration with manufacturers, engineers and other material specialists is an integral part of her practice.
Maria's Ceramic City Bench for the London Festival of Architecture 2018 was shortlisted for the UK Brick Award.
In 2017, Maria was one of the winners of the "Future Lights in Ceramics European Competition" award.
A Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellow, Maria travelled to the USA, Netherlands and Hungary in 2016 and researched manufacturing and applications of architectural ceramics.
During her presentation, Maria will discuss what she considers the possibilities for creating extraordinary architecture by combining ceramic art and industrial manufacturing.
