The Elephant Park masterplan was designed to deliver a vibrant mix of new homes, shops, business and community facilities, set in a network of open spaces including a new public park. Another phase of this major transformation by Lend Lease aims to help Elephant & Castle regain its place as a thriving and vibrant urban quarter of London.
Trafalgar Place is the pioneer scheme for Lendlease’s regeneration of Elephant and Castle. Comprising 235 apartments A new public street, through the middle, reconnects the 19th-Century fabric of the neighbourhood and extends the historic grain and creates pedestrian permeability, while reinforcing views of surrounding buildings and trees.
Eight types of bricks manufactured primarily by Michelmersh, & Ibstock are used, referencing the materiality of the neighbouring buildings. At junctions between varying brickwork colours, keyed-in corners refer to traditional brickwork methods whilst whimsically playing on proportion and scale.
South Gardens contains 360 homes over three plots and nine buildings. The brick and stone facades were the contextual key to integrating the development into the adjoining Larcom Street Conservation Area. It features a row of 'Futurehome' Passivhaus townhouses, first of their kind to be built in Zone 1.
Orchard Gardens contains 228 homes and 20,000 sqft of retail. The project occupies a key location bounded by Walworth Town Hall and terraced housing at the southern edge and an emerging context of tall buildings towards Elephant & Castle Station. To the south, the buildings are lower, responding to the scale found here. The varied brickwork tones help the new development blend into the historic context, giving the impression of having been built over time.
