Located within the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone, the Common Edge Community Sports Village debuted in 2023, marking the completion of its initial phase of development. With an investment of £6 million, the village has become a central hub for sports enthusiasts in the region.

The village boasts extensive sports facilities, including 14 grass football pitches and a full-sized floodlit 3G football pitch, as well as a grass rugby pitch and training area. These amenities cater to a wide range of sporting activities and interests.

At the heart of the village lies a modern sports pavilion, featuring six changing rooms, two officials’ rooms, two kitchens, and a large community room. This pavilion serves as a focal point for players and visitors, providing essential amenities and communal spaces.

To accommodate the influx of visitors, a 194-space car park with sustainable drainage has been constructed, alongside a new access road connecting Common Edge Road to Amy Johnson Way. These infrastructure improvements enhance accessibility and convenience for all users.

The development of the sports village was led by Blackpool Council’s Active Blackpool team, with design consultants Cassidy + Ashton overseeing the pavilion and football pitch plans. Construction was carried out by Conlon Construction, while STRI Group installed the new pitches and AE Yates handled the highway construction.

Beyond its sporting benefits, the village’s development has broader economic implications, unlocking 10.5 hectares of land for commercial development at the former Collins Park site. Additionally, plans for a new access road connecting Common Edge Road to Amy Johnson Way aim to stimulate further commercial growth, with 235,000 sq ft of development plots becoming available for businesses.

Common Edge uses Blockleys Synthesis S17 for a blend of dark blacks and eye-catching greys. The smooth tones help Common Edge to present a modern aesthetic with protruding brickwork elements lending themselves to the unique design of the project

The Common Edge Community Sports Village represents a significant upgrade to the area’s sporting infrastructure, fostering increased participation in community sports and supporting the broader goals of the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone.
