Carters Yard is a 6 storey new build private student accommodation development providing 95 units varying from individual studios to a 9 bed cluster apartment. The site is located on a prominent city centre site bounded in part by the original city wall, an ancient monument within a conservation area.
Behind the facing brick facade is a 6 storey lightweight steel frame with ground floor steel podium.
The original choice of brick, carefully chosen in conjunction with the local planning department to respect the historical context of the site and associated materials was not available in the quantities and timescales required.
Further extensive discussions between the planning officer, client and main contractor resulted in the final choice of the Wienerberger clay brick which provided an excellent match with the adjacent City Wall and planning criteria.
Regular inspections during construction which included the planning officer resulted in the current successful facing brick facades.
The windows are framed with brick piers to articulate the façade and create vertical emphasis reflective of the local vernacular. The sharp contemporary openings are framed with a hand moulded textured brick to compliment the ancient wall’s colour and varied stone. The overall effect is offset with white render to the rear allowing the building’s mass to appear lighter.
The building is surrounded by a mix of hard and soft landscaping utilising permeable paving to complement the brickwork whilst offering a sustainable storm water drainage solution onsite. This includes rainwater harvesting from rooftop drainage which in turn is used to feed WC cisterns.
The project was successfully completed to meet the 2021 /2022 academic year and has been fully let resulting in a commercially successful development for Maven Capital Partners.
