This was the first phase regeneration of Chelmsford’s former Anglia Ruskin University campus site. The project for Genesis Housing was the realised vision of architects Pollard Thomas Edwards (PTE), and plays a key role in the borough’s plan to regenerate the west end of Chelmsford.
The first phase of housing is a new offer to the Essex market town, delivering an urban mix of 145 affordable flats and houses, and 74 for private rent. All homes enjoy views over squares and parks, as well as the comfort and energy efficiency of achieving Level 4 of the code for sustainable homes.
The scheme is opposite Chelmsford Railway Station with a sequence of public spaces connecting the station with Chelmsford Central Park to the South and the old medieval town to the east.
PTE searched the market for a brick cladding system that would allow them to achieve the required aesthetics for the brick finished external façade. They turned to the innovative clay system Corium, manufactured by Wienerberger and supplied exclusively in the UK by Taylor Maxwell.
Station Square anchors the completed first phase, creating a new civic setting for the Anne Knight Building and a gracious entrance to the city centre. Retail spaces, with residential above, create a dramatic curved gateway on the south side of the new station square, gathering a number of converging pedestrian routes and funnelling through to the new urban quarter beyond.
This curved gateway brick facade was achieved using the Corium system installed vertically, third bond on a 20m radius concave curve. Achieving this vertical detail would have been almost impossible in traditional brickwork, and was one of the motivations for the selection of the Corium system. The brick was 290x65 Blue Multi with a dark grey mortar joint profile bucket handle.
215x 65 buff tiles were installed horizontally across the internal courtyard in stretcher bond with Bath stone mortar again with a profile bucket handle mortar joint. The system was also used in 45 degree splay reveals to windows.
215x 65 Red multi tiles were installed horizontally in stretcher bond with dark grey mortar again with a profile bucket handle mortar joint.
215x 65 Green multi tiles were installed horizontally in stretcher bond with dark grey mortar again with a profile bucket handle mortar joint.
Large format Corium tiles 290x215 Green Multi were installed vertically, third bond with a dark grey mortar again with a profile bucket handle mortar joint. This tiled finish added a dramatic panoramic visual across the top floors of the development.
