Commercial Building Award

51 Hills Road was designed by Gort Scott. Anglian Brickwork acted as brickwork contractor and used Mixed Antique bricks manufactured by Coleford Brick & Tile.

‘The scale of the commercial building works successfully for the street frontage and the step down to smaller-scale residential buildings to the rear, creates simple spaces and circulation. There is a carefully considered relationship to surroundings: black brick and white precast concrete are a distinct addition to the street and well integrated. Additionally, the garden wall and court space act as a contemporary continuation of the neighbouring buildings and spaces.’ The architecture includes a natural ventilation strategy using the stack effect and articulated brick chimneys. These factors contribute to its credentials as the ‘greenest’ office building in Cambridge, following BCO standards and achieving the BREEAM Excellent rating.
